Construction
My job means I've always got something to talk
about when I meet people! Office work was just not my cup of tea.
I like the idea of working on projects from start to finish. You
get to find out how things work and what makes thing tick 'literally'
all the time!
Carpenter - Female
99% of apprentices in construction are men.
Working in construction can mean working on the building of houses,
bridges, offices, sports stadiums and many more things. In most
major town or cities building work is everywhere as old buildings
are renovated and new buildings are created. However working in
construction does not simply mean heavy work on a construction site,
it involves a whole variety of jobs such as painting and decorating,
plastering, surveying, architecture, project managing, planners.
When people think of construction they often think of lifting bricks
and demolition! Which simply is not the case. Don’t be put
off by stereotypes.
As construction covers many different types of work different skills
are needed for different things, for examples people may have to
be able to work in a variety of conditions, may have to be in good
shape, a good team player etc. But you do not have to be male!
What qualifications do I need?
GCSEs and Standard Grades are necessary to train as apprentices
in this area.
What's the pay like?
Pay differs depending what you do and how long you do it. A painter
and decorator or construction operative's pay is on average between
£18,000 and £24,000. As a construction manager or supervisor
pay can go up to around £40,000.
