World Of Work

Plumbing

"I love everything about the job. It's challenging - I'll still be learning more and more about plumbing in 10 years time."

Plumber - Female

Over 99% of plumbers are male

Plumbers work on sanitation and waste disposal, heating and ventilation systems or pipe work for the inside and outside of buildings installing and sometimes designing plumbing systems.

They use a variety of skills, tools and materials, and have to make sure their work is carried out safely and accurately and that it complies with regulations.

Some of the skills that may be required in plumbing are to be practical, safe, quite fit, be able to work in small spaces, able to work on your own or as part of a team, good with your hands, good communication skills, able to follow drawings, plans and measurements. But you do not have to be male!

Working hours

Plumbers can work all round the clock if they want, there are no regular hours or days of work.

What qualifications do I need?

Young people can train on the job straight from school, or on a full-time college course. Many train on Apprenticeships. Employers normally expect three to five GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3)

What's the pay like?

Plumbers earn on average around £24,000, however this does vary and can be much more - especially with the demand for plumbers not being met in lots of areas.
